Our Factories

Ethical Manufacturing

Poppy Barley screens all its factories for positive working conditions, including a living wage (Poppy Barley pays, on average, six times the region’s minimum wage), full-time permanent employment with health care and pension benefits, fair working hours, paid vacation and sick leave, and ongoing training and opportunity. We work closely with our factory partners, and maintain ongoing and open communication with the people who make our products.

How We Vet Prospective Factories

Poppy Barley only works with factories that meet our standards for ethical production.
We certify our factories every two years.

Our Standards

  1. Human Rights
    • The Factories can not: use child labour, forced / slave labour, or trafficked, and illegal labour.
    • The Factories MUST: provide freedom of movement, freedom to unionize, freedom of association, freedom of egress, and the right to terminate their employment contract.
  2. Health & Safety - We ensure:
    • The buildings are structurally sound, have clear, unblocked fire exits and equipment.
    • Use and dispose of any hazardous materials correctly.
    • Adequate schedule for machine maintenance.
    • Appropriate insurance and accident record for the past five years.
    • Sufficient washroom facilities and drinking water.
  3. Equality
    • There must be equal pay for equal work and no discrimination based on someone’s gender, race, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, political opinion, social group, pregnancy status or ethnic origin.
  4. A Living Wage, Benefits & Secure Employment
    • Each factory must pay a living wage earned in a maximum of 48 hours of work per week.
    • We ensure the majority of artisans have full-time, permanent employment contracts and are salaried (instead of paid by piece).
    • Employees are offered health care benefits.

The Poppy Barley Factory Code of Conduct Tool was developed based on the International Labour Organization core labour standards and the laws in the countries where we operate. These are the minimum requirements we seek from all factories.

Long Term Partnerships

We believe working long-term with factories furthers our triple bottom line of people, planet and profits.

  • Keeps our product quality very high because we're focused on constantly improving with our current factories.
  • Allows our factories to provide consistent, long-term employment to employees.
  • Enables Poppy Barley and Factories to work towards common environmental and people goals.
  • Support and care for each other during tough times in our businesses (like COVID-19).

Meet Our Factories

Lupita's Footwear Factory

Location: León, Mexico

Number of Employees: 22

Year Established: 1996

The Owner

A true trailblazer, Lupita founded her factory in 1996, an uncommon undertaking for a woman in Mexico. Most factories are founded by men and passed from generation to generation.

Poppy Barley Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Kendall and Justine serendipitously met Lupita through Lupita's daughter, Alba. Lupita was the first factory owner to take a chance on Kendall and Justine, agreeing to make Poppy Barley's first products.

The Factory

Lupita recruits her shoemakers from the sample rooms of León’s top manufacturers. It is in the sample rooms of large factories where the first prototype of a new shoe is handcrafted before it is mass-produced. These artisans have decades of experience in shoemaking, having launched their careers when it was still the norm to make shoes entirely by hand.

Nowadays, their son Sebastian is training to take over the family business.

The Factory

Today, José and Maria Antonia's factory is recognized as the top handbag producer in Mexico. The factory runs on 100% solar power, taking advantage of the fact that Léon is one of the sunniest places in the world.

Belt Measuring Guide

Belt Measuring Guide

A - High-rise style:

If you plan to wear your belt around your natural waistline, wrap a measuring tape around the narrowest part of your midsection. Then, add 3” to determine your high-rise belt size.

B - Mid-rise style:

If you plan to wear your belt lower than your natural waistline, you will require a dierent size. If you have a particular pair of bottoms you intend to wear your belt with, wrap a measuring tape through the belt loops while in a relaxed position.

When wearing your belt in your preferred style, it should fasten in the middle hole. The belt will relax with wear allowing you to cinch it tighter, as needed.

If you plan to wear the belt in both the high and mid-rise styles, you have two options:

  1. Select your high-rise style and fasten it more loosely when worn in the mid-rise style.
  2. Select your mid-rise style and fasten it more tightly when worn in the high-rise style.
